When times are tough...
Vintage 09 is well and truly upon us. The heat and the lack of water have certainly taken their toll on many vineyards. The great oversupply within the industry may well be given a shake-up.
I don't believe that the decline in volume from this year will be the fix that the industry needs, but as much as it will hurt, it may help.
With these tough times it is still extremely important to have a marketing plan in place. This should cover all the usual issues such as product, price, place, promotion and proposition.
Evidence suggests that consumers still drink a similar amount of wine during recessionary times, however they tend to spend less. So keep this in mind with your planning.
How is your brand going to retain its value proposition in the mind of these consumers? Are you maintaining your public relations program? Are you using modern media (using conversational marketing) to drive your brand proposition and communications (e.g. using podcasts, twitter, facebook or wine2.0). The days of relying on only the wine media to tell your story are coming to an end. Why don't you twitter your vintage?
Cheers,
David
