GENERATION WHY?
One of the big topics in the wine industry these days is how do we increase consumption of wine within the 'Generation Y'?
The first question is 'Who are these people?' According to 'McCrindle Research' Generation Y comprise 21% of the Australian population. They were born between 1980 and 1994. They make up 18% of the workforce, and by 2020 they will be 35% of the workforce.
These consumers are marketing savvy and don't like being sold to. They prefer to find out about new products by word of mouth, and much of this comes from some form of social media (such as Facebook and Twitter). However, it's no use setting up identities on these websites and hoping Gen Y comes to you. You need to interact with them - develop a conversation and relationship - and learn from what they tell you about your own brand.
According to Marketingmag.com.au 4.8 millon Australian's are using Facebook. This doesn't make it the be all and end all of your marketing, but it must form part of your marketing mix. It may only be a fad, but its one that demands attention.
Here is a link to a presentation given by Wine Intelligence at the 2009 LIWF on reaching this next generation of wine drinkers which makes some pertinent comments.
